A little known fact about Colorado is that our state folk dance is square dancing. I, on the other hand, are very familiar with it as I have grown up with it my entire life. Tonight, my dad and his square dance club, Mountain Swingers, will be celebrating their 45th anniversary. The photo above with Moffat was taken a couple of years ago during one of the club's Friday night dances. It is featured in Moffat The Rabbit's Colorado Alphabet book under S. Fifty years ago, my parents met in college and started dancing. Over the years, my dad has been flown to Texas, Florida, Montana and countless other places to put on wedding parties and Young Life parties and has taught thousands how to square dance and line dance. Today, he has all the electronic bells and whistles for calling from wireless microphones to remote start sound systems. He gets very excited over a new set of speakers!! I have memories of having to duck out of the hall on a dance night so that my mom and her skirt could pass down the hall! as she and my dad were headed out the door! My dad always took his green Stanley thermos of "square dance" tea. Despite all this from my childhood, I more or less have two left feet and and challenged in my coordination and my husband isn't any better! Happy 45th Anniversary to the Mountain Swingers Square Dance Club. I keep telling dad you need to celebrate to 50!!! |
