One of my favorite parts about visiting a National Park site is chatting with the Rangers.  The Lincoln Home Rangers were a delight.  It was wonderful to hear about Michael's time at the Statue of Liberty and his joy to be at the Lincoln Home.  Ranger Peter proudly stood by the handrail in Lincoln's home that visitors get use as they climb to the second floor.

It is fitting that the two Moffat photographs I have chosen were both taken in Virginia, after all, it it known as the "Mother of Presidents." During my visit there in 2013 to attend an NCHE conference, I was reminded of so many of the pivotal events in our nation's history that have happened in the state of Virginia.  It is amazing to think that events from early colonization to the American Revolution to the Civil War all took place in this state.

Aside from the historical events that have taken place in Virginia, can you name the eight presidents that were born in Virginia? All eight of the presidents are represented in the rotunda in the Virginia State Capitol. George Washington was of course the first and has the center display.

Hint: The other presidents are the 3rd, the 4th, the 5th, the 9th, the 10th, the 12th and the 28th presidents.  Watch the Youtube video below to see if you can name them.

Every teacher everywhere understands these photos all too well.  For days, we have all been at school working to get our rooms ready for that new group of shining faces that will be there to greet us ready for a new year.

Over the next few weeks, I will be posting more photos of sections of my room in greater detail so that you can see how history and geography can be such a great learning theme in elementary classrooms.

For all teachers everywhere, have a great first day!

On This Day In History...Annie Oakley's Birthday

Happy Birthday to Annie Oakley!

For three years, I was fortunate enough to study with a TAH (Teaching American History) group of teachers.  It changed how I look at history and made me even more passionate.

One year, as we were learning how to use PhotoStory, we had one particular instructor who LOVED Annie Oakley.  I, myself, find her very fascinating and love to weave her story in with my tall tales units in my classroom.  The image on the upper right is part of my new timeline/primary source trading cards that will be up on TPT soon.

In the meantime, look at some of my favorite book recommendations and other TPT products from other authors to learn more about Annie.
